The distinction between self-tapping and self-drilling trips up more first-time buyers than almost any other spec in this catalog. Self-tapping screws form threads into a pre-existing hole and rely on the installer (or a pre-drilling step) to get that hole right; self-drilling screws carry their own drill-point tip and skip the pre-drilling step entirely, at the cost of a slightly more expensive part. Ordering the wrong one for the job either wastes the drill-point cost or leaves installers drilling holes that should have been unnecessary.

Point type and thread type both need to match the base material, not just the application category. A sharp gimlet point suits softer materials like plastic and thin sheet, while a blunt point resists splitting wood. Getting this backwards doesn't usually stop the screw from going in — it just produces a weaker, more failure-prone fastening than the same screw installed with the correct point for the material.
